Apple & Wine Pairing
Did you know there are practically as many varieties of apples as there are grapes? And, just like grape varieties, each apple has a different flavor profile, amount of sweetness, and level of tartness. It makes pairing wine with apple dishes and desserts all the more exciting.
APPLE COBBLER + VIOGNIER
While apple cobbler is similar to apple pie, it has a slight difference, the buttery breading!
Because of the buttery breading with apple cobbler, the best wine for this fall treat is a Viognier. Viognier can have that slightly creamy and buttery taste – similar to an oaked Chardonnay. The full-bodied white wine has flavor notes of rose, peach, and honeysuckle that will pair nicely with the apple, cinnamon, and buttery flavors from the apple cobbler.
APPLE DUMPLINGS + RESERVE PICARDAN
Apple Dumplings are a twist on a classic apple pie. These mini apple pies are perfect for a fall themed holiday party or when you’re craving something sweet! The inside of the dumplings are filled with apple, cinnamon, brown sugar, and vanilla. The outside is fresh crescent pastry dough that has that sweet buttery flavor. The best wine pairing for this apple treat is an oaked Picardan. Our Reserve Picardan has been aged in oak barrel and because of that aging it gives it a vanilla and buttery flavor. That butter-like flavor will go perfectly with the pastry dough outside, and then the vanilla and fruit flavors will pair nicely with the filling.
APPLE PIE + MERLOT
We know, you were worried we were going to leave this one out, but we could never! The classic apple pie is a fall tradition and who can blame people for loving it so much.
Our favorite wine for this creation is our Merlot. This wine goes great with the apple, cinnamon, and vanilla flavors in the apple pie.
APPLE CRUMBLE + CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Apple crumble is warm and gooey on the inside but has a slight crunch on the outside! We love our apple crumble with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top! The best wine to pair with this brown sugar and apple creation would be Cabernet Sauvignon. The jammy fruit-forward flavors from the Cab will make a great addition to the apple crumble flavors of brown sugar, apple, and cinnamon.
APPLE CRISP CHEESECAKE + SWEET RIESLING
This apple crisp cheesecake recipe is packed full with everything! Apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and caramel drizzle bring this cheesecake together in fall apple dessert fashion.
For this sweet creation we suggest a sweet Riesling. Riesling has flavor notes of green apple that will go nicely with the apple flavors. The sweetness from the Riesling is also a great pairing for the caramel drizzle and cinnamon flavors.
